No — competition is completely optional.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu offers benefits far beyond tournaments. Many of our students train for fitness, self-defense, confidence, stress relief, and personal growth. While we do support and coach those who choose to compete, there is absolutely no requirement to do so.
Our goal is to help every student progress at their own pace and train for their reasons, whether that includes competition or not.
No — you do not need to be in shape to start training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
BJJ is a skill-based martial art, and training itself is what helps you build fitness, strength, and conditioning over time. Classes are structured so beginners can start safely at their own pace, regardless of current fitness level.
Many students begin training to get in shape, not because they already are. All that’s required is a willingness to learn and show up — we’ll help with the rest.
For adults, the optimal training frequency depends on your goals, schedule, and fitness level. We generally recommend training 2–4 times per week for most adults:
2 times per week: Ideal for beginners or those with busy schedules. Provides steady skill development while allowing ample recovery.
3–4 times per week: Best for those seeking faster progress, preparing for competition, or looking to maximize fitness benefits.
Consistency is more important than intensity. Regular attendance, combined with proper rest and recovery, ensures steady improvement, reduces injury risk, and enhances overall enjoyment of the sport.
